Extending Grace: August 15-August 18, 2023 Update

 Week of August 15- August 18, 2023





Happy Monday! I have been trying to get to this update since Sunday and just getting to it tonight! That's why I included the image above. Extending myself grace and determined to do the same with everyone I encounter as we move into this FUN but STRESSFUL time of year! My plan, moving forward, is for this to be in your inbox each Sunday morning to help prepare you for the following week. You do NOT have to read before Monday but will suggest you get in the habit of reviewing it before we begin the day each Monday at DRES. The format will be similar each week so should be a quick read and something you can revisit as needed. Please feel free to share any suggestions for improvement with me.

Dragonfly Family Updates

  • The Dixon Road Elementary Family would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Michelle Rogers on the passing of her stepmother. More information can be found HERE. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

  • Please keep Ms. Judy, a longtime PTO volunteer, in your thoughts. She had a brain tumor rupture and is at Duke Hospital. According to her family she is being a difficult patient so those that know her well believe she's on the mend.
  • Krystal Glover has been assigned as our ELF for the upcoming school year. Last year she served Four Oaks, West Smithfield, and West Clayton and this year she shares us with West Clayton and Polenta! I am so excited to have her at DRES and hopefully she'll attend one of our BOY meetings to introduce herself.

  • Beginning Teacher Orientation at DRES 
  • Luncheon for Beginning Teachers (1st Year) and Mentors 
  • Focus: Striking the Match
  • Can begin working / moving into classrooms

Wednesday, August 16 (Required School Workday)
  • Opening Meeting at 8 AM-11 AM in Cafeteria for Classified and Certified Staff
    • Breakfast begins at 8 AM
    • Focus: I Can See The Light (Instructional and Curriculum Focus)
    • Postcards Can Be Done (Hopefully but will update closer to 8/16)
Thursday, August 17 (Required County Workday)
  • District Options HERE and At A Glance Can Be Found HERE

Friday, August 18 (Required School Workday)
  • Pictures for Staff at 10 AM in Gym (Certified and Classified)
  • Department Pictures Following Staff Picture
    • Dress: New DRES Shirts (will receive before picture day)
  • 2nd School Meeting 1:00 PM-3:00 PM in location TBD (Certified must attend; Classified welcomed)
    • Focus: Lights, Camera, Action (Tina's Channel, NCEES, Money Matters, Schedules, Q&A from 8/16 and 8/17)
  • New to DRES Coffee Chat 3:00-3:30 in Conference Room

As many of you know, at Dixon Road ES we will be celebrating the love of reading all month for Read Across America. I am excited to have time to celebrate authors, books, and hopefully ignite a love of reading in some students who don't have it already. HERE you will find events planned for the month. It is the expectation that at least twice this month you meet with your buddy class to read. The list of buddy classes can be found on the calendar in the notes section at the bottom. I am also sharing the Staff Favorite Books Slideshow that you can share with your students anytime this month and will beg Ms. Tina to have it up in the office a few days this month. Week of 10/23

  This week, I wanted to share a quick video that illustrates the GIST Strategy that can be found on the walkthrough tool under Reading Strategies. To hep students get the gist (get it...gist) of the strategy you could do as a class a few times and then after some time and with scaffolding as needed you can gradually release it to students to complete it independently. Also, please know that I placed the  WICOR Playbook on our dashboard under Instructional /Digital Resources for your convenience.
