As we conclude our focus on anticipation guides, I wanted to give you an anticipation guide for you to complete before our Wednesday Staff Meeting . This is a forced copy so please do not print this out, just bring your laptop to the meeting and have this accessible. I also wanted to share some cool examples for how an anticipation guide could be used in math , especially as we move into some the challenging problem solving, measurement, and fraction units. Hope you have enjoyed the weekend and recovered from our full moon week! See you tomorrow! Week of 2/19-2/23

Last week was a one of highs and lows but most definitely know the highs came from my walkthroughs and interactions with staff and students. While walking through the rooms, I took pictures of WICOR and Artisan Teacher Evidence and will keep this up in the coming weeks to document the wonderful things happening each day for our students. Since this month we have been focused on anticipation guides, I want to share an evidence from a 4th grade classroom of Anticipation Guides completed as part of HMH Modules. This is built in to teh curriculum but you and I know sometimes we don't feel we have the time to do these options in curriculum. After hearing the students and the teacher talk through the process I argue that we don't have time NOT to do this strategy. If you're doing anticipation guides in your room BRAVO. If you are not, what are you waiting for? There is a saying that we make time for what's important. Activating prior knowledge and setting a purpose for readin...

This week I want to share a site where you can explore anticipation guides. HERE is a site with a video of an anticipation guide in use and then a variety of anticipation guides that you can use that include a WHY column as well as one focused pm Character POV. If you decide to try one in class this month, I would love for you to either invite a member of the admin team/curriculum coach to the lesson or be willing to share about it at our February staff meeting. Pictures or video would be an added bonus. I'll even throw in a week of jeans pass for you and you'll have a WICOR Star hung outside your room 😉 Birthdays Alicia Batista -2/11 Michelle Taboas-2/16 Week of February 12-February 16, 2024                                                                 Purple   Duty Rotation ...

For the month of February, I thought it would be an awesome time to review the WICOR strategy of using an Anticipation Guide. The AVID Resource Guide shares that  "anticipation guides are used before the reading of a text to activate students’ prior knowledge and build curiosity around a new topic. Many educators use anticipation guides as a pre-reading strategy, since the guides launch students into the exploration of key concepts by engaging them in critical thinking about the concepts prior to reading". This strategy takes pre-planning but there are a lot of other WICOR strategies that can be employed during this activity like turn and talk and a collaboration activity where students line up instead of writing on the anticipation guide to show if they strongly agree or strongly disagree with the statements. Here is video of the strategy in action to start us off. Birthdays Mariana Valdes-2/10 Week of February 5-February 9, 2024            ...
