Week of 9/25

This week in one of the PLCs I talked about doing better once you know better. This podcast is an example of why I am continuing my LETRS journey because I know better and need to do better...you and the students deserve my best. Interested in diving into the messy and angry debate over reading...check out the short Podcast Series Sold a Story . I was shocked on how money and ego drove leaders to make uninformed decisions that ultimately impacted me and tons of my fellow educators and more important the students we taught. Take a listen and if you want, share what moved you with me and other colleagues. Have a great weekend and I'll see you Monday. P.S. Beginning at 7 AM tomorrow I am going offline for some major downtime. I will not be checking emails at all but if it's an emergency and can not wait until Monday at 7:30 AM, PLEASE text me, call, or send me a message in telegram. Happy Sunday! Don't know about you but I have a new occupant in my life and their name is stress. It was present as I finished up my doctorate, but it moved out in December of last year and hasn't had such a heavy presence until 8/28/23. Here's a quick TED TALK that discusses how stress can be a friend and not seen as an enemy, If this topic interests you, take a listen...about 15 minutes long. To aid in our implementation of WICOR Strategies at DRES, my blog will focus on a different WICOR Instructional Practice each month with the second strategy of Collaboration being discussed throughout the year. For September, we will focus on how Organization Can Make Collaboration rigorous. Organization is . . . ● Managing materials ● Planning & prioritizing ● Strategically controlling your learning responsibly  Students who organize . . . ● Develop & use processes ● Manage their time well ● Interact with their teachers ● Use self-direction & self evaluation We know how important Organization can be and what would be a better time to help students grasp these vital learning strategies? By teaching students how to organize their materials, time, and learning we make collaboration more rigorous? How you may ask? Collaboration is . . . ● Teamwork with shared responsibility ● Sharing of ideas, info, & opinions ● Formal/informal discussion  Students who collab...

One week down and 35 weeks of instruction ahead! Thank you to each of you for all you did to make the best out of hard situations this week as we adjusted to the "new". I saw moments each day last week that confirmed that we have exactly what we need to meet the high academic and social emotional goals we have set for the year. I thought the quote above was appropriate because throughout the year we will have moments where we have accomplished a goal and are ready to celebrate but something new, different, or something we felt we were past will come back and remind us there is still work to do. That's where perseverance comes into play. Together we can accomplish BIG THINGS and SHINE BRIGHT this year. When one of us gets tired and needs to step away, someone come and tag in and take on the current short race so our colleague can rest up for the next. This can only be done with communication so find your safe places and let people know how they can support you. 35 more s...
