Week 10/2

Week of October 1-5, 2023
Birthdays
Please check our staff calendar to see if your birthday is listed on the calendar. If it is NOT, please email Kelly at the front desk to get it added. Your birthday present is 45 minutes...come in late, leave early, have a duty free lunch, extended planning, etc. Just need to know when your birthday is to get you your time. This gift is for classified and certified staff.

Collaboration Strategy: Carousel

This activity encourages all students to interact through reading and writing.

  1. Write different but related questions or prompts on chart paper and post the papers around the room.
  2. Students move around the room either freely or in small groups and write ideas or answers on each paper. Alternately, you can have them record the ideas on sticky notes at their desks ahead of time and then post the notes on the appropriate papers.
  3. Share and process the ideas with the whole group with a gallery walk (students silently move from poster to poster, reading and noting important ideas) small group to whole group presentations or some other technique.
A carousel uses wait time for planning and a degree of anonymity in answering to create a nonthreatening atmosphere in which all students have an equal chance share their ideas.
Reading Strategy: FLIP (Article can be found HERE)

a. The letter “F” stands for Friendliness: How friendly is my reading assignment? Students look first for text features such as graphs, picture, summary statements, or study questions and share they think reading texts will be about with two of their classmates.

b. The letter “L” stands for Language: How difficult is the language in my reading assignment? The students scan the text estimating the number of unfamiliar terms they may encounter in order to assess difficulty of the language usage in this reading assignment. Look at the visual. What can you learn from them? How might they relate to the title?

c. The letter “I” stands for Interest: How interesting is my reading assignment? The students read heading titles and picture captions to determine aspects of the text that may be of interest to them. At the step, information can be found in many places. The students find as much information as they can by flipping through the book information and looking as titles, chapters, and headings, table of contents, index and highlighted words.

d. The letter “P” stands for Prior knowledge: What do I already know about the material covered in my reading assignment? Finally, they try to connect what they already know to the topic presented in the text they are about to read. Accessing prior knowledge can help student to begin to connect the known to the new and, therefore, better comprehend the new text. At the last step the students predict what they will learn, how the story or information will be told.

REMINDERS
  • Fire Department will be here on 10/11 and I will send out a schedule for classes that traditionally see the truck by next weekend. If someone has a schedule from last year, please feel free to share it with me.
  • Please remember to post a lightbulb of nomination for classified and certified staff member for the month of September by Tuesday afternoon.
  • Here is the updated duty schedule. We will continue to run the yellow rotation this week and then the purple rotation begins 10/2. Your name is colored for your rotation. Please make sure you find your own substitute if you are going to be out.
  • Having clubs at DRES has been a tradition over the years. If you are interested in leading a club, please send Dr. Hill an email by 10/10/23.
  • Staff That Wear The Parent and Staff Hat at DRES: Please be reminded that when you are here at school you are a staff member first and must communicate and operate as such. Please do not disrupt your child's class or contact your child's teacher any other way than other DRES parents are able to do during the day. We discussed in August the challenge of wearing both hats and recognize that it can be difficult but your cooperation is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me. Also, if your child will not be in your room before or after school but in another staff member's room you MUST get permission from that staff member before sending your student to the different class. The reason for that is supervision and if someone or something is damaged the staff member where children are will be responsible for those in their care.
  • We need your help staff...please make sure that students report to their homeroom first thing in the morning. The only exceptions are picking up breakfast and walking their kindergarten or PreK sibling to class. Students can not go visit their favorite previous teacher or grade level when making their way to their room. Please help our students be successful in holding them to this expectation.

Check These Things Out

Dear teachers of Dixon Road Elementary, I am conducting a study that examines how principals’ support and decision-making influence teachers’ self-efficacy, job satisfaction, and commitment to stay at their schools in North Carolina. Teachers will be compensated with a 20 USD Amazon e-gift card for their participation and the survey takes between 20-30 minutes to complete. Eligible teachers must have worked at Dixon Road Elementary School under Mr. Kenneth Bennett's leadership tenure. If you are interested in participating in this study, please contact me at 919-637-9326 or by email at sljackm2@ncsu.eduThank you! Stella, PhD Candidate, College of Education, NC State University

NC ELA Standards Review Surveys:

The English Language Arts team in the Office of Academic Standards requests your thoughtful input and comments on the current academic standards for English Language Arts to inform the review and revision process.  Any individual who wishes to provide input on the English Language Arts SCOS may complete these surveys.  The surveys are estimated to take about 10-20 minutes to complete, depending on the survey you choose. You may choose both surveys.  Surveys close on November 10th.
