Week of October 16, 2023

This week, I will not be sharing more WICOR strategies but instead sharing something that I have seen increase student proficiency and academic outcomes at the three school I have led previously. As we close our first quarter, this is an awesome time to take a few minutes to reflect on what you've accomplished so far this school year and what things you need to revise, review, and recalibrate to get you to where you want you and your students to be in June 2024. It's also a good time to reflect on the word you picked for this school year and ask your self if you are walking out your word in your daily interactions, conversations, etc.

Last week, a team from DRES attended a Standards Based Learning session which will be one of 4 this school year. The district is revamping and relaunching its focus on Standards Based Learning and I am personally excited about this journey. Although many in the room expressed the need for this work to occur quickly, we now realize to do Standards Based Learning correctly it will take time, training, protocols, and direction for this to be done correctly and not just be another additionally thing. I believe what excited me the most was the focus on what we want students to know and the need to ensure that students know where they are going and where they currently are. This idea aligns to my word for the year...purpose. I want all that I do professionally and personally to have purpose. The purpose of education, in my option, is to empower our children to become capable and knowledgeable adults who can go into the world and positively impact their families and communities. By focusing on standards and not just curriculum, we are ensuring that no matter where our students come from they are capable of succeeding because they have the needed knowledge for their future educational and/or career paths.

As I shared earlier, empowering students to own their learning in integral to student success. Below is a screenshot of research I borrowed from our training last week.

This concept of students owning their learning and actively being a part of it is one of our school's SEL goals. What does that look like in the classroom? Click HERE to view a video on how to start with daily goal setting activity. And here's an article with 6 Activities That Inspire Goal Setting. I would love to see you embrace this concept, if your haven't, and help students chart their journey for Quarter 2 as we complete Quarter 1.

I hope you are enjoying your weekend and I look forward to watching amazing things happen for our students this coming week.

Items for Attention

  • The DRES PTO will host a Trunk or Treat in our bus parking lot on Friday, October 27th.
    • Staff Challenge👀👀
      • 1 staff member on your grade level/department host a trunk (decorate and staff a vehicle's trunk)= jeans all week for your grade level/department
      • 50% participation of your grade level/department in hosting trunks (decorating and staffing vehicle's trunk)= jeans for the month of November
        • Candy will be provided by the PTO to pass out to children
      • Please complete this form to sign up by 10/20/23. EACH STAFF MEMBER HOSTING A TRUNK MUST SIGN UP SEPARATELY
  • Please remember to post a lightbulb of nomination for classified and certified staff member for the month of October.
  • Here is the updated duty schedule. Please make sure you find your own substitute if you are going to be out.
  • Staff That Wear The Parent and Staff Hat at DRES: Please be reminded that when you are here at school you are a staff member first and must communicate and operate as such. Please do not disrupt your child's class or contact your child's teacher any other way than other DRES parents are able to do during the day. We discussed in August the challenge of wearing both hats and recognize that it can be difficult but your cooperation is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me. Also, if your child will not be in your room before or after school but in another staff member's room you MUST get permission from that staff member before sending your student to the different class. The reason for that is supervision and if someone or something is damaged the staff member where children are will be responsible for those in their care.
  • We need your help staff...please make sure that students report to their homeroom first thing in the morning. The only exceptions are picking up breakfast and walking their kindergarten or PreK sibling to class. There are no reunions. If you are at their door and they speak, that's awesome but they need to get to their class to complete their morning assignments.  Students can not go visit their favorite previous teacher or grade level when making their way to their room. Please help our students be successful in holding them to this expectation.
