Week of October 9, 2023
This week, I would like to share just one strategy that can be used for Reading and you could then expand on that same activity by using a collaboration strategy. One of my favorite educators to follow on social media is Jennifer Gonzalez. She has an impressive website called Cult of Pedagogy. There you can do a search for all things education. This week, I am sharing an article about One Pagers. When you click here you are able to either read the selected article OR you can listen to the podcast. One pagers could be an awesome way to check understanding after students read a text or watch a video. Here are free templates and rubric information.
You could then complete a gallery walk with students which falls under the collaboration and can extend the same activity. Students could each share their one pagers during this activity.
As you work on incorporating WICOR strategies into your lessons, please remember that I do not expect to see WICOR strategies in every lesson. I don't expect to see WICOR strategies in every subject's lesson plan. What I would like to see is that you are exploring these strategies and trying them out to increase engagement and student learning. And if you are trying them, include them in your lesson plans and discuss them with teammates and other colleagues.
If you are wondering where to start, review the strategies included on the walk through tool and do a quick google search for videos/information on how to execute. You can also do searches for AVID Strategies not listed on the walkthrough tool by doing searches such as ADVID WICOR Strategies for (enter the topic you want to use it with).
As we move thorough the year, I hope you see how the incorporation of these strategies can increase student engagement in their learning and increase the rigor in your lessons.
Have an amazing week!
Angela

- Dragonfly Dash during Enhancements
- Please refer to email sent on 10.6.23 (copied text below)
- The Dragonfly dash walk day will be Fri, Oct 13, during your enhancement times. You may invite your parents if you would like. Each group will be treated to Pelican Snowball after the walk. T-shirts will be sorted soon & passed out. DO NOT send them home. Students can change when they arrive at school on Friday, and they can take their shirts home that afternoon. Our DJ said the teachers could send a teacher or class song request for Dragonfly Dash. Please keep encouraging your class to sign up and make a donation. The funds received drive what we can and can not do for this school year. Next week's popsicle winners will only be based on the donation collected each prior day. They can send requests to https://app.nosongrequests.

- Here is the updated duty schedule.]Please make sure you find your own substitute if you are going to be out.
- Having clubs at DRES has been a tradition over the years. If you are interested in leading a club, please send Dr. Hill an email by 10/10/23.
- Staff That Wear The Parent and Staff Hat at DRES: Please be reminded that when you are here at school you are a staff member first and must communicate and operate as such. Please do not disrupt your child's class or contact your child's teacher any other way than other DRES parents are able to do during the day. We discussed in August the challenge of wearing both hats and recognize that it can be difficult but your cooperation is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me. Also, if your child will not be in your room before or after school but in another staff member's room you MUST get permission from that staff member before sending your student to the different class. The reason for that is supervision and if someone or something is damaged the staff member where children are will be responsible for those in their care.
- We need your help staff...please make sure that students report to their homeroom first thing in the morning. The only exceptions are picking up breakfast and walking their kindergarten or PreK sibling to class. There are no reunions. If you are at their door and they speak, that's awesome but they need to get to their class to complete their morning assignments. Students can not go visit their favorite previous teacher or grade level when making their way to their room. Please help our students be successful in holding them to this expectation.
