Week of January 8-12, 2024

 



This month I'd like for us to explore the importance of first reads, close reads, and multiple reads. For this week, I'd like to focus on the strategy listed on the WICOR playbook the district has shared. If you get a chance to review the link you will see how vital this skill is and this should be a familiar share with those staff members using HMH because the re-reading of stories is built into the modules you execute. This link has a great graphic organizer to help students discover how reading the same text multiple times can given them more information after each read. The three main purposes of the multiple reads are:

PURPOSE FOR 1ST READ
Gaining a general understanding of the text.

PURPOSE FOR 2ND READ
Examine language and structure of text.

PURPOSE FOR 3RD READ
Make inferences, craft opinions and arguments, and make intertextual connections.

Next week, I'll share a video of this in practice as well as other resources that you maybe able to utilize in your room.

Information to Review

  • NCDPI is hosting an Elementary Math Content Professional Learning Content Series this semester.  These virtual sessions are from 4:00 - 5:30 pm on the following dates: January 11, February 8, March 14, and April 11.  The January 11 session, Integrating Data Literacy Throughout the Content Standards, is led by NCDPI Content Specialists from Math, ELA, Science, Social Studies. The focus of the session is to explore the multi-disciplinary use of data. Participants will interact with slow-reveal graphs and engage in discussion to explore how data literacy can be developed through integration of multiple content areas. As many of you know, at Dixon Road ES we will be celebrating the love of reading all month for Read Across America. I am excited to have time to celebrate authors, books, and hopefully ignite a love of reading in some students who don't have it already. HERE you will find events planned for the month. Week of 10/23

  This week, I wanted to share a quick video that illustrates the GIST Strategy that can be found on the walkthrough tool under Reading Strategies. To hep students get the gist (get it...gist) of the strategy you could do as a class a few times and then after some time and with scaffolding as needed you can gradually release it to students to complete it independently. Also, please know that I placed the  WICOR Playbook on our dashboard under Instructional /Digital Resources for your convenience.
