This week I want to share a site where you can explore anticipation guides. HERE is a site with a video of an anticipation guide in use and then a variety of anticipation guides that you can use that include a WHY column as well as one focused pm Character POV. If you decide to try one in class this month, I would love for you to either invite a member of the admin team/curriculum coach to the lesson or be willing to share about it at our February staff meeting. Pictures or video would be an added bonus. I'll even throw in a week of jeans pass for you and you'll have a WICOR Star hung outside your room 😉

Information to Review

  • NCDPI is hosting an Elementary Math Content Professional Learning Content Series this semester.  These virtual sessions are from 4:00 - 5:30 pm on the following dates: January 11, February 8, March 14, and April 11.  The January 11 session, Integrating Data Literacy Throughout the Content Standards, is led by NCDPI Content Specialists from Math, ELA, Science, Social Studies. The focus of the session is to explore the multi-disciplinary use of data. Participants will interact with slow-reveal graphs and engage in discussion to explore how data literacy can be developed through integration of multiple content areas. Instruction on gender identity, sexual activity, or sexuality shall not be included in the curriculum provided in grades kindergarten through fourth, regardless of whether the information is provided by school personnel or third parties. For the purposes of this section, “curriculum” includes the standard course of study and support materials, locally developed curriculum, supplemental instruction, and textbooks and other supplementary materials. “Curriculum” does not include responses to student-initiated questions about gender identity, sexual activity, or sexuality. Supplementary materials, not related to the standard course of study, regarding gender identity, sexual activity, and sexuality will not be provided to students in kindergarten through fifth grade. 

Please review your personal classroom libraries. If you have any books that violate the law above, please remove the book from the classroom library. If you are unsure about a book, please submit the book to Ms. Mangum, our media specialist, and the book review team will make a decision about the book. If you have any questions, please let me know.

As many of you know, at Dixon Road ES we will be celebrating the love of reading all month for Read Across America. I am excited to have time to celebrate authors, books, and hopefully ignite a love of reading in some students who don't have it already. HERE you will find events planned for the month.   This week, I wanted to share a quick video that illustrates the GIST Strategy that can be found on the walkthrough tool under Reading Strategies. To hep students get the gist (get it...gist) of the strategy you could do as a class a few times and then after some time and with scaffolding as needed you can gradually release it to students to complete it independently. Also, please know that I placed the  WICOR Playbook on our dashboard under Instructional /Digital Resources for your convenience.
