Week of February 5-9, 2024

For the month of February, I thought it would be an awesome time to review the WICOR strategy of using an Anticipation Guide. The AVID Resource Guide shares that  "anticipation guides are used before the reading of a text to activate students’ prior knowledge and build curiosity around a new topic. Many educators use anticipation guides as a pre-reading strategy, since the guides launch students into the exploration of key concepts by engaging them in critical thinking about the concepts prior to reading". This strategy takes pre-planning but there are a lot of other WICOR strategies that can be employed during this activity like turn and talk and a collaboration activity where students line up instead of writing on the anticipation guide to show if they strongly agree or strongly disagree with the statements.   • NCDPI is hosting an Elementary Math Content Professional Learning Content Series this semester.  These virtual sessions are from 4:00 - 5:30 pm on the following dates: January 11, February 8, March 14, and April 11.  The January 11 session, Integrating Data Literacy Throughout the Content Standards, is led by NCDPI Content Specialists from Math, ELA, Science, Social Studies. The focus of the session is to explore the multi-disciplinary use of data. Participants will interact with slow-reveal graphs and engage in discussion to explore how data literacy can be developed through integration of multiple content areas. As many of you know, at Dixon Road ES we will be celebrating the love of reading all month for Read Across America. I am excited to have time to celebrate authors, books, and hopefully ignite a love of reading in some students who don't have it already. HERE you will find events planned for the month.   This week, I wanted to share a quick video that illustrates the GIST Strategy that can be found on the walkthrough tool under Reading Strategies. To hep students get the gist (get it...gist) of the strategy you could do as a class a few times and then after some time and with scaffolding as needed you can gradually release it to students to complete it independently. Also, please know that I placed the  WICOR Playbook on our dashboard under Instructional /Digital Resources for your convenience.
