ACADEMIC STANDARDS

ELA Standards Writing Team Application Promo

Standards Writing Team (SWT) Applications

Applications are open through May 31, 2024.

SWT members review the findings of the Data Review Committee (DRC) and utilize those findings to revise the Standard Course of Study.

*Note: The SWT's revisions are guided by the continued work of the Data Review Committee (DRC); therefore, members of the current DRC cannot serve on the Standards Writing Team (SWT).

Applications can be submitted through May 31, 2024. The ELA SWT will consist of a range of external stakeholders, including: K-12 educators, educational leaders, university professors, content professionals, experts from partner organizations, and community members. The SWT members will be chosen from across the state’s eight regions and represent varying perspectives and experiences regarding the current ELA Standard Course of Study.

New Canvas Course! Foundations of Writing: Handwriting and Spelling

We are pleased to announce the new asynchronous Canvas course, Foundations of Writing: Handwriting and Spelling, which is now available to teachers, related service providers, administrators, and district leadership.

This course is focused on the development of foundational writing skills. Accuracy and automaticity of handwriting and spelling are necessary in order to concentrate on written composition. Participants will learn about the background, prevalence, and impact of writing and spelling challenges for students with and without disabilities.

Handwriting and spelling development is predictable; however, all students need high quality, differentiated core instruction while some students may require more targeted systems of intervention to be successful. This course will discuss instructional, curricular, and environmental enhancements to support diverse learner needs within an MTSS. Participants will examine specially designed instruction for writing and spelling for students with disabilities, including a specific learning disability such as dysgraphia.

Individuals interested in completing the course can find it in NCEES and can complete it independently or within a professional learning community.

Note: This course was collaboratively developed by literacy and occupational therapy consultants within the Office of Exceptional Children at the NC Department of Public Instruction and reviewed by practitioners in the field as well as interagency partners at DPI.
